Johnny English (codes and convention of an action adventure)
The sub-genre for Johnny English is a comedy action and a
spy comedy. The films focus is similar to one of the James Bond Franchise, with
British spies with a humour being the protagonist and the villains are foreign.
The heroic protagonist in Johnny English is Johnny English, however he is not the
usual spy (he seems to not know or have knowledge of the spy world in great
depth) He is an antihero in the film as we see that in the beginning he was
actually the Head spy’s secretary... The Villainous agonist is portrayed by
Russian Woman who you wouldn’t suspect to be evil due to her attire and her
look. Often villains in British spy
films aren’t attractive it is normally the spy. However in this case the
villain possess the beauty but not the hero
The first way in which the narrative (characters) is an
example of the action adventure genre is the use of suspense and jeopardy. In
this scenario the opening sequence utilises jeopardy. For example when Johnny
English starts his mission is in front of the big mansion which will be heavily
guarded with Dogs he must find a way to escaping them and het into the house without
the villain knowing he is present. So in order to distract the dogs, he brings
out chewy toys to prevent them from barking loud. This is also very comical as
the character who plays Johnny English also plays the character Mr Bean. To the
audience this could be a nod to the British household character who audiences
have come to know and love. The second part of jeopardy would be when the spy
gets caught and is stuck between rocks in a hard place. Either escaping and being
killed or tricking the villainous antagonist. Which leads me to my point of
spies being resourceful. Because this is a spy action adventure, it is
important for the spy to be prepared for whatever scenario might hit him and
that cannot happen without the god quality tools, Johnny English however
doesn’t need high tech to be resourceful, all he uses are everyday items that
we found in our own homes. Making him appear to make being a spy very easy and
effortless.
The location of the film is not set in an exotic country but the house
in which the film starts out as is exotic due to its size and complexity. Even the protagonist is not accompanied by
sidekicks or helpers and is not afraid to face the villain. Following the same
plot twist as James Bond, James Bond has a way of flirting out of trouble in
which Johnny English does to the villain. The woman who plays the villain seems
to be not that good at being a villain as she falls for the average looking spy
and letting her guard down. The spy
world consists of linguistic text that aren’t used in everyday life. Like in
bond every agent is given a number and we and the characters in the movies don’t
refer to them by their real names. To create an element of mystery.
The second way in
which the narrative (Events) is an example of the action adventure genre is the
setting of the film. The film is set in London not very exotic but idolised by
millions around the world. 
The missions however in the narrative show audience
a world of glamour and sophistication. This can be seen in the way that the
spies in the intelligence office conduct themselves and their work attire –
very formal. The film follows the convention of having very little dialogue and
more action. This is an example of speed and motion. A lot of the opening is
presented rather quickly – Johnny is set a mission, he must go to the location
of the mission and destroy the villain and restore the world to justice. The soundtrack
of the film puts emphasis on the movement of the spy. Fast pace music and
sounds and Bond music, allows audiences to anticipate action and prepare for it
before it comes. When Johnny English is
running is away from danger, the soundtrack it feels like we are running as
well. The spectacle of the entire opening is shown at the funeral of the
realistic Spy Agent 6 when the head of the intelligence agency asks Johnny if
the area they are in is safe and clear of any threat. Only to have a massive
bomb explode near them, killing all potential replacement for Agent 6. The audience
automatically thinks about the only option left to be a spy and that’s Johnny
English. He is the last person on Earth to be chosen to be a spy.
