Taskmaster and Dave

For our exam, we need to know why Taskmaster is a good fit for the comedy channel Dave. we looked on Dave's information for advertisers, which outlined Dave's brand:

TV Advertising on Dave

Dave offers television advertisers an expensive audience base of generally younger adults, many of whom are professionals turning into the later time slots. The daytime slot is particularly popular amoungst students, whilst overall, the channel holds more appeal to male viewers.
Dave, known as ‘The Home of Witty Banter’, specialises in British comedy and general entertainment, such as Mock the Week, QI XL and Top Gear, with much of its content emanating from terrestrial television archives. Brands such as Love Film, Match.com, Google, William Hill and Heineken are regular TV advertisers on the channel.

What does the Taskmaster website say about the show that clearly makes it fit the channel? It is skewed to a male audience as...

Greg Davies is the Taskmaster. With the help of his ever-loyal assistant Alex Horne he will set out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive, and sometimes unimpressed, stand-up comedians Roisin Conaty (Man Down), Tim Key (Mid Morning Matters With Alan Partridge), Romesh Ranganathan (Mock The Week), Frank Skinner (Room 101) and Josh Widdicombe (The Last Leg).

Expect arguments. Expect both cheating AND arguments.

As the Taskmaster Greg Davies will set a series of stupefying tasks to test our comedians. From eating a watermelon as fast as possible to painting a picture of a horse while riding a horse, they will be tested to the absolute limits of absurdity.

As the Taskmaster's devoted associate, Alex Horne is on hand to keep track of the scores and coax the contenders to show their creativity, conniving side and competitiveness. Rivalry will be encouraged, dodgy tactics rewarded and bribes obviously accepted in what is set to be the most dogged, hard-fought, and ridiculous comedy game show on television.

Johnny English: Action and Adventure Codes and Conventions

Question 1

Johnny English (codes and convention of an action adventure)

Image result for james bondThe sub-genre for Johnny English is a comedy action and a spy comedy. The films focus is similar to one of the James Bond Franchise, with British spies with a humour being the protagonist and the villains are foreign. The heroic protagonist in Johnny English is Johnny English, however he is not the usual spy (he seems to not know or have knowledge of the spy world in great depth) He is an antihero in the film as we see that in the beginning he was actually the Head spy’s secretary... The Villainous agonist is portrayed by Russian Woman who you wouldn’t suspect to be evil due to her attire and her look.  Often villains in British spy films aren’t attractive it is normally the spy. However in this case the villain possess the beauty but not the hero

The first way in which the narrative (characters) is an example of the action adventure genre is the use of suspense and jeopardy. In this scenario the opening sequence utilises jeopardy. For example when Johnny English starts his mission is in front of the big mansion which will be heavily guarded with Dogs he must find a way to escaping them and het into the house without the villain knowing he is present. So in order to distract the dogs, he brings out chewy toys to prevent them from barking loud. This is also very comical as the character who plays Johnny English also plays the character Mr Bean. To the audience this could be a nod to the British household character who audiences have come to know and love. The second part of jeopardy would be when the spy gets caught and is stuck between rocks in a hard place. Either escaping and being killed or tricking the villainous antagonist. Which leads me to my point of spies being resourceful. Because this is a spy action adventure, it is important for the spy to be prepared for whatever scenario might hit him and that cannot happen without the god quality tools, Johnny English however doesn’t need high tech to be resourceful, all he uses are everyday items that we found in our own homes. Making him appear to make being a spy very easy and effortless.
The location of the film is not set in an exotic country but the house in which the film starts out as is exotic due to its size and complexity.  Even the protagonist is not accompanied by sidekicks or helpers and is not afraid to face the villain. Following the same plot twist as James Bond, James Bond has a way of flirting out of trouble in which Johnny English does to the villain. The woman who plays the villain seems to be not that good at being a villain as she falls for the average looking spy and letting her guard down.  The spy world consists of linguistic text that aren’t used in everyday life. Like in bond every agent is given a number and we and the characters in the movies don’t refer to them by their real names. To create an element of mystery.

The second way in which the narrative (Events) is an example of the action adventure genre is the setting of the film. The film is set in London not very exotic but idolised by millions around the world. Image result for james bond settingsThe missions however in the narrative show audience a world of glamour and sophistication. This can be seen in the way that the spies in the intelligence office conduct themselves and their work attire – very formal. The film follows the convention of having very little dialogue and more action. This is an example of speed and motion. A lot of the opening is presented rather quickly – Johnny is set a mission, he must go to the location of the mission and destroy the villain and restore the world to justice. The soundtrack of the film puts emphasis on the movement of the spy. Fast pace music and sounds and Bond music, allows audiences to anticipate action and prepare for it before it comes.  When Johnny English is running is away from danger, the soundtrack it feels like we are running as well. The spectacle of the entire opening is shown at the funeral of the realistic Spy Agent 6 when the head of the intelligence agency asks Johnny if the area they are in is safe and clear of any threat. Only to have a massive bomb explode near them, killing all potential replacement for Agent 6. The audience automatically thinks about the only option left to be a spy and that’s Johnny English. He is the last person on Earth to be chosen to be a spy.

Lara Croft

Question 1. (10 mark)
 Lara Croft film.jpg
Tomb Raider is an example of action adventure video game. The heroic protagonist is Lara croft (played by Angelina Golie) and the villainous antagonist (who opposes the hero) is the sidekicks are two innocent men who are inferior to Lara croft (who are Greek). The main theme of this extract is Good vs Evil.
The first way in which the narrative (characters) is an example of the action adventure genre is identifying who is the heroic protagonist in this case the protagonist is Lara Croft. A woman and not a man – throughout the extract you see Lara being surrounded by a male presence (the first being her sidekicks the second being the villains) this gives us, the audience especially the female audience a sense that this woman isn’t ordinary, she doesn’t seem to be controlled by the men; she controls them. Like most action adventure films the protagonist is always portrayed as resourceful and clever. Her bag carries all her gadgets (props) like her video camera to record evidence in the tomb and her weapons to eliminate the antagonist. Which begins the point of combat and conflict evidently seen between Lara Croft (a British female) and the villains who are always played as foreigners (Asian), they try to prevent her from achieving her goal/mission by shooting her down with a spear from the top of tomb.  Despite putting herself in danger by climbing to the top of the tomb, Lara has on a brave face and will often easily beat the antagonist even when she is outnumbered. Lara is attractive, athletic and youthful – this is seen in her outfit which showcases her slim figure, her facial features are exotic in comparison to an ordinary woman and her fast paced movements (jumping from one spot to another within seconds) and her brown hair which is sleek back and that doesn’t have a single grey hair unlike her antagonists.  Even though

The second way in which the narrative (Events) is an example of action adventure is seen in the opening sequence where we see the location is set in a tomb unlike Action Adventure films like James Bond normally set in the country of the spy’s origin/ in cities. The extract is shot using low key lighting creating the effect of suspense. We can also tell that the Tomb is dark when Lara has to use a flame torch used to light the way for her to get around the tomb. Speed and motion is represented using close up shots (to indicate where Lara would be shot by the Villains) and long shots. The shaking camera shots indicate that the temple/tomb is going to fall or be destroyed within seconds. The events of the extract can only be resolved through conflict meaning that the protagonists (Lara) has to be the one to destroy the villains. Despite them being intimidating Lara makes an extreme effort to defeat them which makes it look effortless. This is known as jeopardy. She often finds herself having little time
